The Pre-Art Therapy program will help you learn how. Internships are an important part of the program, because that is where you'll learn how to apply what you've learned about the main fields of art - painting, ceramics, and drawing - to actual clients. You will develop a sophisticated portfolio that demonstrates your mastery of imagery - a mastery that will one day allow you to facilitate the healing imagery of the people you work with.

Pre-Art Therapy will help you get into an advanced degree program and become an art therapist. The flexibility of the program allows you to major in art and minor in psychology, or vice versa. Adrian students have a 100 percent acceptance rate in art therapy at Wayne State University, and have attended The University of Louisville, George Washington University, and New York University.

To practice art therapy professionally, students must receive a Masters in Art Therapy degree. Students who contemplate pursuing this specialized graduate training are advised to complete the following course of study, developed in accordance with The American Art Therapy Association:

  • A major in Art or Psychology with special attention to development of a sophisticated portfolio which shows competence in a wide variety of media.
  • Art majors: Psychology 100, 205, 303, 304 and 311.
  • Psychology majors: Art 100, 101, 103, 201, 205, 301, 303, 305, with at least 6 credits of 351 in one medium.
  • Completion of an internship of at least 3 hours with a registered Art Therapist.
