Posted Tuesday, September 12, 2023

The George W. Romney Institute for Law and Public Policy at Adrian College will host this year’s Philip J. Prygoski Constitution Day Address at noon on Monday, Sept. 18, in Knight Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

The speaker for the event is Professor David A. Moran, co-founder of the University of Michigan Innocence Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School. His address is titled “How Wrongful Convictions Happen Despite the Bill of Rights: A Report from the Michigan Innocence Clinic.”

Moran has devoted his career to exonerating and releasing wrongfully convicted inmates from Michigan prisons. He has argued six cases before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Prior to joining the University of Michigan’s faculty, Moran was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Wayne State University Law School.

“I’m confident Professor Moran’s address will inspire us to think of constitutional rights in new and challenging ways,” said Nathan Goetting, Director of the George W. Romney Institute for Law and Public Policy.

Professor Philip J. Prygoski, passed away in 2019. He was a former administrative law judge for the State of Michigan Board of Licensing and Regulation and constitutional law professor for 35 years, provided invaluable support to the Romney Institute during the critical stages of its infancy. In recognition of his outstanding service to teaching and the constitution, starting in 2012, every year on Constitution Day, Adrian College’s Romney Institute for Law and Public Policy hosts a renowned speaker to deliver the Annual Philip J. Prygoski Constitution Day Address on a contemporary issue of constitutional concern.

Knight Auditorium is located in Valade Hall off Williams Street. For more information, contact Goetting at ngoetting@adrian.edu.
